The Do's and Dont's of Maintaining Your Hardwood Floor

The Do's and Dont's of Maintaining Your Hardwood Floor

Wood floors are an investment, and when it comes to sports facilities, the performance and safety of athletes depend on the quality of the playing surface. Whether you're a coach, gym owner, or involved in facility maintenance, here are essential dos and don'ts to ensure the longevity and safety of your Courtclean wood floor.

Dos:

  1. Follow Manufacturer's Specifications: Always protect your wood floor per the manufacturer's specifications. This ensures you're taking the right steps from the beginning.

  2. Daily Damp Mopping: Sweep your floor daily with a properly treated damp mop. This simple step removes harmful dust, grit, and abrasive particles that can damage the surface.

  3. Keep It Dry: Especially during inclement weather and at exterior doorways, ensure water stays off the floor surface. Moisture can be your floor's worst enemy.

  4. Prompt Spill Cleanup: Immediately remove any spills or moisture from the floor to prevent damage and maintain safety.

  5. Use Approved Cleaners: Remove marks with an approved floor cleaner compatible with the floor's finish. Always use a non-abrasive soft cloth or dust mop. Reach out to us for a list of approved cleaning products.

  6. Check Before Rolling Loads: Before putting any rolling loads, like bleachers or stages, on the floor, consult with us for performance and safety considerations. A minimum of ¾” CDX plywood must be laid on the floor first to protect it.

  7. Maintain Proper Humidity: Ensure your heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems are functioning properly and set to maintain indoor relative humidity between 35 to 50%.

  8. Avoid Tape: Using any type of tape on the floor can likely damage its surface. Consider using light-colored tempera paint for temporary lines, which can be easily wiped away and washed off with water within a reasonable time.

Don'ts:

  1. Don't Shut Down Ventilation: Never shut down the ventilation system in your facility for prolonged periods, as it can impact the floor's condition.

  2. Avoid Scrubbing Machinery: Never use scrubbing machinery or power scrubbers that use water to clean your wood floor. Unnecessary scrubbing will remove your court's finish and ultimately diminish the life span of the court.

  3. Consult Before Modifications: Don't attempt to modify or repair your wood sports floor without first consulting us or your flooring contractor. It's essential to understand the proper procedures.

  4. Avoid Household Products: Never use household cleaning products or procedures on your floor. They can be harmful to the finish and the wood itself, potentially making the floor unsafe for athletes.

  5. Say No to Tape: Avoid using tape on a wood gym floor. Instead, opt for light-colored tempera paint for temporary game lines, which can be easily removed with water within a reasonable time.

Moisture Management:

Moisture can impact your wood floor significantly. Wood naturally absorbs and releases moisture, leading to expansion and contraction. Our installations consider these factors, ensuring your floor can expand and contract naturally without causing damage.

By following these dos and don'ts, you'll not only extend the life of your hardwood floor but also provide a safe and top-performing surface for athletes.
